FAQ’s
I use a Chimney Creosote Log (CSL) to clean my chimney? Do I still need a professional sweeping?
YES. While the CSL is an effective, CSIA approved product, it only aids in removing creosote buildup in the chimney. The log cannot tell you if there is a blockage, crack or other safety concern in your chimney like your certified sweep can. These type of logs can loosen the creosote buildup, but droppings of creosote can land on the smoke shelf, be caught in a curve connector, etc. If not removed once fallen, this may cause a blockage or chimney fire. CSL’s do not replace the need for annual chimney inspections and cleanings. Please see Related Links for more information on the Chimney Creosote Log.
How often should my chimney be cleaned / inspected?
CSIA and NFPA recommend yearly inspections. Even if you don’t have a fireplace your furnace and hot water heater often vent into the chimney and can become blocked , clogged or damaged and could be letting poisonous carbon monoxide into your home.
Do I need to be home for the cleaning / inspection?
It is not necessary, but we recommend it.
How long does the average cleaning/inspection take?
The average cleaning and inspection can take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. Circumstances vary (house size, number of flues, etc.) and some may take longer or shorter than others.
I only burn my fireplace on special occasions (Christmas, Thanksgiving). Why do I need yearly inspections?
Just because you only use your fireplace certain times of the year doesn’t prevent damage from occurring. Animals, obstructions and time can cause damage to your chimney that may make it unsafe to use even once!
